The Growing Mental Health Field

The Growing Mental Health Field

The mental health industry is a growth industry in the United States, and there are bright careers for those entering the mental health field as psychologists or psychiatrists. Every year new patients are diagnosed with some form of mental illness, so there is always a demand for talented and driven practitioners to help them recover. In the United States, the three largest groups of mental illnesses are Anxiety, Mood Disorders, and Major Depressive Disorders. All three of these can be treated through psychopharmaceuticals as well as traditional and non-traditional psychotherapy. Over half of all those afflicted with mental illness never seek treatment, and they suffer from that decisions. The two main reasons given for not seeking treatment are thinking that it would be too expensive and that their illness isn’t severe enough to warrant treatment or that it can be dealt with without expert advice. There is a growing acceptance of mental health care at a societal level and as such, there has been a corresponding growth in jobs as mental care is integrated into everyday functions. There has been an increase in counselors for middle and high schools as well as the private practice psychologist; overall the mental health field is expected to grow by nearly 40% by 2020.

One of the largest growing fields is Substance Abuse, which has risen to prominence as the opioid crisis repeatedly makes local and national news. Many people find themselves trapped in the vicious cycle of addiction after they’re prescribed painkillers for surgery or injury and they find themselves unable to stop using them. Columbia Wellness specializes in treating addiction, and we continually come up with innovative ways to provide treatment to our patients. We treat traditional mental illnesses with the same dedication to excellence and innovation. Treatment begins from the moment outpatients step through our doors, and its effects continue long after they left because we look at each patient holistically instead of piecemeal. Our treatment plans can involve helping create the changes in lifestyle necessary for our patient’s success along with the traditional combination of psychotherapy and psychopharmaceuticals.

This large growth in the mental health field is why Columbia has sought to expand its facilities, programs, and staff. We’ve been at the leading edge of mental health care for over 70 years, and we pride ourselves on providing the best possible treatment to our patients. We provide counseling and treatment at all levels of care from the cursory to a highly-involved level that can include not just the patient but their loved ones as well. We do this by hiring the best talent available and compensating our employees above the industry norm. At Columbia wellness, we’re dedicated to being involved in our local community, and we regularly participate in fundraisers, charity events, and other public service works. If you have an interest in providing solutions to problems, and a dedication to caring about others than a career in mental health care may be the right fit for you!
